News Title Vertus to Bring Greener, Cleaner Coal to Cincinnati
News Details

Vertus Technologies has selected Kiesland as their building partner for the first U.S. clean coal processing facility along the Ohio River in Queensgate.  The $2.5 million facility is the first step in the Vertus operation which is set to open at Cincinnati Bulk Terminals.

Kiesland’s project management, building knowledge and expertise with heavy industrial processes were the perfect combination of skill sets for this emerging technology.

The Vertus project will be led by Kiesland’s Director of Project Development, Rick Seaver.  Seaver, working with Vertus Director of Design and Construction, Dan Wilson, will also help coordinate the efforts of Architect, Professional Design Associates (Cincinnati), Heyl Patterson (Pittsburgh) providing specialize plant equipment and GAI Consultants (Ft. Wayne) who round out the civil design and special permitting efforts.

This greener, cleaner coal product will not only be more efficient and gentler to the planet, but provide competitive opportunities to the region.  Ohio’s high-sulfur coal, which produces heavy sulfur dioxide emissions when burned, has historically put the state at an economic disadvantage.  The Vertus technology, a patented process called Reductive Thermal Process (RTP), will remove 97-99% of the sulfur, mercury and chlorine emissions associated with coal burning.

Additional strengths:

  • Coal is the fuel used today to meet 50% of the electricity needs of the United States.
  • Coal is both readily available and easily accessible and unlike oil and gas, which can be spilled or leaked, coal is easily handled and safely transported.  Coal is much less expensive than oil and gas.
  • In the next 10 years more than 1,000 coal-fired plants are scheduled for completion in the Untied States, China and India.
  • It is estimated that global coal reserves will provide most electricity for the next 200 years.  In comparison, oil and gas reserves might be exhausted in 40 to 70 years.

Vertus’ new coal pre-combustion technology can simultaneously eliminate many environmental problems and allow the US to more fully utilize existing coal reserves.  In the case of existing, traditional coal-fired plants – the technology allows them to meet EPA standards more economically.

Vertus plans to use the facility to process and ship more than 100,000 tons of low-emission, high quality, compliant coal each year.  The project is scheduled for completion in early 2009.
